Founded in Namba in 1910 (Meiji 43), Jiyuken is one of Osaka's oldest Western-style restaurants. It is nationally famous for its "Specialty Curry," in which the rice and curry roux are mixed beforehand with a raw egg dropped right in the middle.
The ingenuity behind the birth of the signature curry
At the time of our founding, when there were no heat-retaining food jars, our signature curry was born from the desire to serve the curry as piping hot as possible by mixing freshly cooked rice and curry roux together in advance. The mellowness of a well-beaten raw egg combined with the spicy roux, finished with a dash of Worcestershire sauce from the table—this is the Jiyuken style of eating.
The taste loved by Sakunosuke Oda
A regular at this restaurant was Sakunosuke Oda, a writer representative of Osaka. Jiyuken's curry also appears in his novel "夫婦善哉" (Meibutsu Fufu Zenzai / Married Couple). Along with the phrase displayed inside the restaurant—"Tigers die and leave their skins; Oda Saku dies and leaves Jiyuken's curry"—this is a dish you will want to savor while feeling the history of Minami, a town of literature.
